Toon’s Blu-Ray Review: Green Lantern First Flight – 9/10

“I want to grow up and be just as awesome as Hal Jordan”

I am at a loss for words. Although I can’t really speak on behalf of all those unfamiliar with the DC Comics lore, for those of you that are, you will absolutely love this film. ‘Green Lantern: First Flight’ is an animated film that is a direct to Blu-Ray/DVD release, much in the same vein as ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘Gotham Knight’ and ‘Justice League: New Frontier’ before it. Unlike the previous three, DC Comics has finally hit the mark with this film. This is the most fantastic and possibly iconic representation of Green Lantern on screen, and one that should take precedence as a reference in any future films. It is a science fiction epic, with great animation, spot on voice acting and an immense soundtrack. All those amazing Geoff Johns comic books finally have a voice to go with its characters, and a bad ass new Green Lantern theme song to play over and over in my head.

Hal Jordan, bad ass.

Hal Jordan, bad ass.

So, the story… The Green Lantern Corps is a collection of wise and powerful individuals from across the universe, each bestowed with a ring through which they can channel their will power in to a force. The Green Lanterns are selected and watched over by a race of immortals, known as The Guardians, who have existed since the beginning of time at the center of the universe. ‘Green Lantern: First Flight’ picks up the story of the most famous human Green Lantern, named Hal Jordan. Nevermind, Ryan Reynolds confirmed as Green Lantern

There is a God. After frightful news yesterday that homo sensation Justin Timberlake was one of the three candidates screen testing for the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming Green Lantern film, last night it was semi-confirmed that Ryan Reynolds had won out after much debate between producers and director. Backstreet Boy fans, rejoice!

Good choice.
Good choice.

My personal choice for the role was Bradley Cooper of ‘Alias’ and ‘The Hangover’ fame, I was convinced that Reynolds was devoted to his ‘Deadpool’ spinoff plans. There is no doubt that he is the finest and most versatile actor out of the three, well two, Justine hardly counts as a male or an actor. Physically Reynolds is a beast and will look defintely look the part, checking out his performance in ‘The Nines’ shows that he definitely able to play the part as well. It’s all down to how director Martin Campbell utilizes him. We’ll see in two years time, damn that is far.

The script of the film ‘Green Lantern‘ follows the original ‘Emerald Dawn’ origin story of Hal Jordan and may possibly include a cameo from Clark Kent, yes that is Superman. Also Kyle Rayner, Guy Gardner, Sinestro, Kilowog and Abin Sur are all expected to make appearances. The writers of the script are best known for their television credentials (‘Eli Stone’ & ‘Everwood’) as well as some forays in to comic book writing. The film is being directed by Martin Campbell, best known for revitalizing James Bond in ‘Casino Royale’. Scheduled for release June 17th, 2011… ‘Green Lantern’ has a budget of $150 million dollars and will be filming in Sydney, Australia.

Who do the people want to see as the Green Lantern?

Justin Timberlake as The Green Lantern!?

Yes, you can grab your Backstreet Boys CD’s and start hurling them at the screen. THR is reporting that boy-band-sensation-turned-captain-cool-guy Justin Timberlake is screen testing as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern for the upcoming 2011 adaptation of one of DC Comics most powerful superheroes. Also in the pot for the role is Bradley Cooper from ‘The Hangover’ fame and the ever brilliant Ryan Reynolds. The film is going to be directed by Martin Campbell, the man responsible for delivering the impeccable ‘Casino Royale’. With a budge of over $150 million, I have very high hopes that a man as gritty and sensible as Campbell will deliver a great film.

And coming up on your left hand side is a p****, and on your right is the opposite of a p****

Hal Jordan is not exactly a nice guy, and he’s not a small guy either. At one point in his story arc he became a supervillian and carried out a number of not-nice massacres. Justin Timberlake is a cool dancer and all, plus he likes to sing like a woman in some of his songs… both could be cool traits for Hal Jordan to have (sarcasm). However, Justin is a tiny man, he is incapable of being taken seriously as an angry man and most crucially he is not an acting man. Moving on, I am a great admirer of Ryan Reynolds. He is a scene stealer, but with his commitment to developing a Deadpool film (a character from the recent Wolverine X-Men film), I see no credibility in this casting rumour. There is no chance he will be involved in two superhero franchises. Plus, Reynolds is a very cute looking man (no homo) and just looking at him makes you want to smile. Not something you want with Hal Jordan.

That leaves Bradley Cooper who would be my preference… Read the rest of this entry »
