Toon’s Review: Iron Man 2 – 5/10

I hate stupid people, almost as much as I hate traffic. Tony Stark at various points in the movie keeps checking his “Blood Toxicity Level”, which is steadily rising. At 56% we catch a close up of a very concerned looking Tony Stark, at which point a man sitting behind me remarks “Hey, is that a bad thing?”.

Stupid people, Scarlett Johansson is a little stupid looking I must say. I might have spelled that wrong but I could care  less since her acting is also quite incorrect, if I want eye candy I will happily open up a magazine. At least there I don’t have to put up with a formerly blonde bombshell doing cart wheels followed by her making a stupid face at the camera.

I digress as I often do. ‘Iron Man 2’ is a completely average movie, strip away the stars and you have a very poorly written story and very basic action scenes. The direction and cinematogrophy is again plain and typical. Nothing exciting save a few slow motion moments, one that almost veered into Bollywood territory. The only redeeming quality of this film is from a set of superb performances that make far better material out of a shoddy script.

‘Iron Man’ was a very average movie made good thanks to a refreshing role by Robert Downey. ‘Iron Man 2’ on the other hand is a near terrible film, made decent due to a brilliant turn by Sam Rockwell. This guy is a bloody hero in a half shell in every role he plays, and he is a welcome scene stealer in this film. Downey was exceptional as usual, its a crime that this indecent script gave these two actors absolutely no time on screen to develop a rivalry. This sentiment presents itself through out the movie. It is a mix of too many ideas and too many plot points, none of which are presented well. Tony Stark’s fall from grace is awkward, his anger towards Rhodey becoming War Machine was poorly developed and absolutely no time was given to the Hammer vs. Stark dilemma.

‘Iron Man 2’ is an unsatisfying film, the action was pathetic and the film as whole has no personality or style save Rockwell and Downey. Jon Favreu’s last movie before ‘Iron Man’ was ‘Zathura’, he got away with it a few years ago but his inept ability as a director is clearly evident in this utterly bland film. Maybe the inherent problem lies in the Iron Man suit itself, it is a fancy terminator. He is just not as cool as Green Lantern.

Buddy boys.

There's that face.

Iron Man 2: First Look at War Machine!

8/5/10 – So it’s finally out, here’s my review of ‘Iron Man 2’. A terrible movie to be honest:

27/7/09 – UPDATE#2: At Comic-Con this weekend, it has been confirmed from the footage shown that War Machine is in the film and that the armor looks “BAD-ASS”. Here’s a description of the footage shown from www.superherohype.com:

courtroom scene earlier where Rhodey is remaining faithful to his government like a good soldier and they have called upon weapons expert Justin Hammer, played by Sam Rockwell, to modify the first wave Iron Man armor into something more suitable of either taking on or replacing Stark’s Iron Man. Hammer walks up to the original Iron Man lying on a table asking what they did to it, which Rhodes says is classified then asks what Hammer is going to do for them. “I’m talking about firepower,” he clarifies. Hammer says they’re talking to the right guy and he starts pulling out all sorts of guns and weapons to retrofit on the armor, but doesn’t seem to be getting much reaction from Rhodes or the general, even with something he calls “Uncle Gazpacho or Puff the Magic Dragon.” Cheadle says “I think I’ll take it…” and when Hammer asks which one, Rhodey responds, “All of it.” And then we see our first look at the retrofitted Iron Man armor as WAR MACHINE, which looks BAD-ASS!!”

Here’s a few more images from comics and what not to give you an idea of what War Machine may look like:

18/7/09 – UPDATE: It seems like that image is directly from the comics:

Also, the toy for ‘War Machine’ has been making rounds around the internet as well:

Take of this what you will. Regardless, all signs point to the fact that we will see ‘War Machine’ appear in some capacity during the film.

Original Article

As some of you may know Comic-Con is coming up and lots of new information about movies, games, TV shows and what-not-have-you is expected to be released by everybody who is anybody.

‘Iron Man 2’ news has been trickling out steadily over the past month, yesterday we saw EW’s first look at Scarlett Johansson in character as well as some information on the story. More on that later… Don Cheadle’s character is replacing Terrance Howard in the role of Military Commander and best friend to Tony Stark, James Rhodes… To those of you in the know, this is also the character that plays ‘War Machine’, a bad ass version of the ‘Iron Man’ suit with guns, lots of extra guns. Here’s a first look:

This image is from a T-Shirt that will be available during Comic-Con. Usually this stuff can be a bit hodge podge but the fact that it is listed to go on sale exclusively at Comic-Con and only on the show floor makes me less skeptical about its authenticity. However it is certainly more along the lines of concept art rather than  a direct in-film image.

‘Iron Man 2’ is well in to filming and over the past few months we have seen great casting and some tid pid pictures from set trickle out. Here is a quick rundown of what’s happening in Iron Man 2 and who’s who courtesy of www.slashfilms.com:

  • Sam Rockwell plays a fast-talking weapons manufacturer named Justin Hammer, “who fancies himself the next Tony Stark”
  • Mickey Rourke plays Russian criminal Vanko, who creates his own battle-suit while incarcerated in a Soviet prison.
  • Whiplash’s suit “shoots devastating, whip-like beams.”
  • Hammer and Whiplash join forces to take on Stark/Iron Man,
  • Rourke insisted that his character have a cockatoo, which he talks to and gets drunk with while he’s making the suit.
  • Scarlett Johansson plays Russian superspy (possibly undercover?) Natasha Romanoff (aka the Black Widow), who is hired as Stark’s assistant which inevitably sparks romantic tension between Stark and former assistant Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow), who’s been promoted to CEO of Stark Industries.

Some other images officially released through Entertainment Weekly show the first look at Scarlett Johansson as the ‘Black Widow’, and to be honest she looks fantastic! Perfect, after Emily Blunt dropped out of the role due to schedule conflicts, the news of Scarlett came as a bit of a disappointment… her usual blonde bombshell appearance just did not fit the bill of red headed Russian superspy. However these latest images dispel those fears.

I am very excited to see the ‘War Machine’ suit in action. With an all star villain cast consisting of ever brilliant Sam Rockwell and the resurrected Mickey Rourke, this film is heading towards only the nicest of things.
